My Love affair with Film & Fun with Filters (Part 1)
My Love affair with Film

Grateful Gallery, Glasgow, on Kodak Ektar |
I’ve been shooting film for about six months now—pretty much non-stop. Safe to say, I’m totally hooked. Over that time, I’ve thrown myself into all kinds of workshops and training sessions, trying to get past the steep learning curve and become a bit more self-sufficient. I’ll share some of the stuff I found helpful below (with links and details), in case anyone reading this is also about to fall down the same rabbit hole....
- Feb 2025 - Introduction to SLR and Development, by Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow
- Mar 2025 - Darkroom Workshop (10 weeks), City of Glasgow College, Glasgow
- Apr 2025 - Street Photography and Developing, by MAKE @Narture, Ayr
- May 2025 - Eco Friend Developing, by MAKE @Narture, Ayr
- June 2025 - Pinhole Photography Workshop, by MAKE @Narture, Ayr
Still to attend.....
- Aug 2025 - Salt Print and Cyanotype, Weekender, by Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow
As someone who only recently started shooting film, I have been tankful that there has been an accessible, and sizeable community of training available in the West of Scotland. It has helped me develop my skills and also fuelled my creativity. I’ve also been trying to attend photo walks, at the end of May I attended one organised by a photographer called Stu Morrison (nonstopgeain) and in June I have nabbed a space on Analogue Wonderlands Glasgow “Big Film Walk”.

As someone who has only recently got into shooting film, I’ve been really grateful for how accessible and active the film community is here in the West of Scotland. There’s been loads of great training and support, which has not only helped me build up my skills but also kept the creative spark going. I’ve been making an effort to get out to photo walks too—at the end of May I joined one run by Stu Morrison (aka @nonstopgrain), and in June I managed to grab a spot on Analogue Wonderland’s “Big Film Walk” in Glasgow.
Fun with Filters Part 1
One of the tools I have been using to improve my shots is lens filters. This started mainly with colour filters to add some contrast and style into my Black and White negatives (I bought from Mad Cameras) but has now progressed to art filters and warming filters for colour film.
One of the most fun filters I recently used was a small 49mm that I found on Cameras by Max, it’s given me some nice results….

I’ve just ordered another batch of films from Cameras by Max, so I’ll get them tried out soon enough.
